Ear infection, known as “otitis media” is an inflammation or an infection that affects the middle ear. The middle ear is placed immediately after the eardrum.
An acute “otitis media” lasts for a short time, is painful, and is usually preceded by an upper respiratory infection or allergy.
A chronic “otitis media” lasts for a long time and recurs many times.
Every ear, behind the eardrum, has a tube named the “eustachian” tube which links the nasopharynx to the middle ear. If for any reason (cold, throat infection, virus, or allergy), the eustachian tube gets blocked, and fluid accumulates inside the middle ear. This is the perfect ground to grow germs such as viruses and bacteria which can cause infections.
Severe media otitis can cause perforation of the eardrum.
It is known that ear infection affects most babies and children all over the world. Till the age of three, 80% of the children will be affected by otitis media for the first time. Boys are more prone than girls.
Attention: Infants who suffer from ear infections are prone to develop allergic eczema and asthma.
The medical approach is antibiotics, pain relievers, some ear drops, and antihistamines. The application of a warm tissue on the outside of the ear is quite helpful against the pain. If there is no cure for all the above then surgery is the only solution.
In the market, there are also some formulas that help the treatment of ear infections and are based on Chinese medicine.
