Warts

Warts are small, self-limited benign skin growths caused by human papillomavirus (HPV) infection.

Warts are generally painless and can affect any part of the body. Because of being contagious, they may spread from one to another body area. They also can spread from person to person. It often takes a few months for warts to grow large enough to see.

Anyone can get warts. The virus also needs to have a point of entry into the skin. The most prone people are:

  • Children and teens.
  • People with weakened immune systems.
  • People who bite their nails.
  • People who cut or damage their skin.
  • Parts of the body that people shave such as the beard area in men and the legs in women.

Warts disappear within one or two years but they can return at the same site or appear in a new spot. They often spontaneously go away, but particularly stubborn warts may require medical intervention.

Types of warts

  • Common warts: They are transmitted by touch. Common warts are small, round grainy bumps, flesh-colored, yellow, or grey. They primarily onset on the hands, fingers, and nails but they may appear also on the face, knees, and scalp. Rough to the touch, common warts also often feature a pattern of tiny black dots, which are small, clotted blood vessels

Common warts mostly appear where the skin was broken and usually disappear on their own.

  • Foot or plantar warts: They are found on the bottom of the feet areas where we feel the most pressure. They can grow in clusters (this is known as mosaic warts). They are small, flat, hard, grainy growths often with multiple black specks in the center which are bits of coagulated blood. They usually become inflamed and painful.
  • Flat warts: They are small, smooth, flat, flesh-colored pimples that may onset on the face, arms, legs, and other parts of the body, usually in large numbers.

Children usually get them on the face. Women tend to get them on their legs and men get these most often in the beard area.

  • Filiform warts: They are small, thin, flesh-colored long warts that appear around the mouth, nose, eyes, and beard area. They look like long threads or thin fingers that stick out growing quickly.

  • Genital warts: They are bumpy, rough growths that appear on the genitalia. They may onset singly or in clusters. They look like small flesh-colored, pink, or red growths and may grow and spread very quickly.
